Infrared Counterparts to Chandra X-Ray Sources in the Antennae

چکیده
We use deep J (1.25 μm) and Ks (2.15 μm) images of the Antennae (NGC 4038/9) obtained with the Wide-field InfraRed Camera on the Palomar 200-inch telescope, together with the Chandra X-ray source list of Zezas et al. (2002a), to search for infrared counterparts to X-ray point sources. We establish an Xray/IR astrometric frame tie with ∼ 0. 5 rms residuals over a ∼ 4.3 field. We find 13 “strong” IR counterparts brighter than Ks = 17.8 mag and < 1. 0 from X-ray sources, and an additional 6 “possible” IR counterparts between 1. 0 and 1. 5 from X-ray sources. Based on a detailed study of the surface density of IR sources near the X-ray sources, we expect only ∼ 2 of the “strong” counterparts and ∼ 3 of the “possible” counterparts to be chance superpositions of unrelated objects. Comparing both strong and possible IR counterparts to our photometric study of ∼ 220 IR clusters in the Antennae, we find with a > 99.9% confidence level that IR counterparts to X-ray sources are ∆MKs ∼ 1.2 mag more luminous than average non-X-ray clusters. We also note that the X-ray/IR matches are concentrated in the spiral arms and “overlap” regions of the Antennae. This implies that these X-ray sources lie in the most “super” of the Antennae’s Super Star Clusters, and thus trace the recent massive star formation history here. Based on the NH inferred from the X-ray sources without IR counterparts, we determine Department of Astronomy, University of Florida, P.O. Box 112055, Gainesville, FL 32611; [email protected]. Near-infrared counterparts to the Galactic Bulge Survey X-ray source population
We report on the near-infrared matches, drawn from three surveys, to the 1640 unique X-ray sources detected by Chandra in the Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS). This survey targets faint X-ray sources in the Bulge, with a particular focus on accreting compact objects. We present all viable counterpart candidates and associate a false alarm probability (FAP) to each near-infrared match in order to ide...
متن کاملThe X-ray Luminosity Function of “the Antennae” Galaxies (ngc4038/39) and the Nature of Ultra-luminous X-ray Sources
We derive the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of the X-ray source population detected in the Chandra observation of NGC4038/39 (the Antennae). We explicitly include photon counting and spectral parameter uncertainties in our calculations. The cumulative XLF is well represented by a flat power law (α = −0.47), similar to those describing the XLFs of other star-forming systems (e.g. M82, the disk...
متن کاملTesting the starburst/AGN connection with SWIRE X-ray/70μm sources
We explore the nature of X-ray sources with 70μm counterparts selected in the SWIRE fields ELAIS-N1, Lockman Hole and Chandra Deep Field South, for which Chandra X-ray data are available. A total of 28 X-ray/70μm sources in the redshift interval 0.5 < z < 1.3 are selected. The X-ray luminosities and the shape of the X-ray spectra show that these sources are AGN. Modelling of the optical to far-...
متن کاملGalactic Centre X-ray Sources
We report on a campaign to identify the counterparts to the population of X-ray sources discovered at the centre of our Galaxy by Wang et al. [7] using Chandra. We have used deep, near infrared images obtained on VLT/ISAAC to identify candidate counterparts as astrometric matches to the X-ray positions. Follow up KS-band spectroscopic observations of the candidate counterparts are used to searc...
متن کاملThe X-ray Source Population of “the Antennae” Galaxies: X-ray Properties from Chandra and Multiwavelength Associations
We investigate the nature of the luminous X-ray source population detected in a (72 ks) Chandra ACISS observation of NGC 4038/39, the Antennae galaxies. We derive the average X-ray spectral properties of sources in different luminosity ranges, and we correlate the X-ray positions with radio, IR, and optical (HST) data. The X-ray sources are predominantly associated with young stellar clusters, ...
